Abu Dhabi Business Hub - Phase II - United Arab Emirates
Dynamic Replacement
Type of ground, geology :
The site's original ground level was about 1 m lower than final floor level. The upper 2 m of the site was composed of medium dense sand with SPT blow counts as low as 13. The sandy layer was immediately followed by a very soft layer of sandy silt/clay that can be found almost everywhere in Mussafah. The thickness of the soft material was variable from 1.5 to 2 m, and its SPT blow counts were as low as 1. Fines content ranged from 35 to 95%. The soft stratum was followed by medium to very dense silty sand with SPT blow counts starting from as low as 12, but rapidly increasing to more than 50. Bedrock was encountered at the depth of 9 m. Groundwater was 2 to 4 m deep.
Problem to be solved :
Abu Dhabi Business Hub Phase II is the primary phase for constructing the multi purpose warehouse buildings in the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD), Mussafah, UAE. This phase with about 60,000 m2 of storage area is intended to meet the requirements of numerous prospective companies that are interested in increasing their storage capacities in Abu Dhabi. The warehouses' slabs on grade were expected to be loaded uniformly to 3,000 kg/m2, and had to settle less than 25 mm under that load.
Menard Solution :
Dynamic replacement, a Menard invention for treating soft soils, was well understood to be the optimal foundation solution for the slabs. Avoiding roller compaction of the granular fill in between the original ground level and final ground level became possible by placing and compacting the material during soil improvement works. The presence of a gas pipe on one side of the project and numerous sewage pipes throughout the site was also taken care of by implementing specific vibration reduction measures. Contractually, dynamic replacement works were scheduled to be carried out in 4 months, but the works were accelerated, and performed in a shorter period by the mobilization of an additional DR rig.
Conclusion :
30 post treatment pressuremeter (PMT) tests were carried, and finite element analyses of the test results clearly demonstrated the fulfillment of the requirements.
